I went to the E.N.T. doctor following the recommendation of my GP.
Since I have sleep Apnea that's pretty bad, and can't tollerate CPAP treatment, my doc strongly urged me to visit a specialist.
He did an exam and discovered that I have an 80 percent obstruction of my air way. To make a long story short, I'll be having my tonsils removed, deviated ceptum corrected, and my pallet trimmed on November 9.
I've had many surgeries throughout my life but for some reason, this one is scaring the crap out of me.
I was less nervous when I had a radical hysterectomy and gall bladdar out all at the same time. How wierd is that? This one won't even require a stay in the hospital but from what I've been told, it's gunna hurt like hell. I've heard horror stories about having ones tonsils out as an adult. I made the mistake of doing a little internet research too. Oops, won't do that again. lol

On one hand, I'm looking forward to getting this issue resolved because it's causing me many problems. I know the recovery will only be bad for about a week or so but ug, it just sounds aweful. On another bright note though, it will be a great chance to quit smoking. lol

Have any of you ever had this done as adults?

I haven't, but as one who has had numerous sergeries throughout life, I'll say this. try to talk yourself down from freaking out. the more you do that, the harder you're making it on yourself in the end. nothing in life worth having, ever comes easy. no pain, no gain, in other words.
I know that's probably the last thing you wanna hear, but it's the truth.

Post 3 by bea (I just keep on posting!) on Friday, 12-Oct-2012 11:14:28

Will you have somebody with you before and after surgery? Amazing how much that helps.

Post 4 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Friday, 12-Oct-2012 12:19:29

Yep, I'm very lucky in that my mom will be with me before and after. She's going to keep the family afloat while I recover. Yay.
I have the best mom ever so I have no worries there. I'll be flooded with popcicles, smoothies, soups, pain killers, etc and therre'll be no mutany in the house. lol.
I'm in my mid-30's and still think there's nobody like my momma when I'm sick. lol

Moms are great aren't they no matter what age? Mine died when i was in my 20's and I can tell you, getting help by a caregiver versus having mom around is very difficult, especially with all the explaining you need to do at times for a caregiver who can be clueless as to your needs compared to mom. You can get sedation for your procedure; just let the doctor know you are scared. Good luck to you.

I got my eye removed on June 19 of this year, and I'll tell you this much. It was scary for me to. The best thing I can advise you to do is if possible, take music to listen to before and after the operation, it might keep you calmer. I know it did me. HTH

Post 9 by Thunderstorm (HotIndian!) on Monday, 15-Oct-2012 3:50:36

be brave and confident. as HH said, no pain, no gain. but the pain will go off and make you feel comfortable soon though.

Raaj.

I've just been reminding myself that even though it'll be bad, it'll all be worth it in the end and the pain won't last for ever. Looking forward to being able to sleep through the night without being woken up several times to turn over so I'll start breathing again is a great motivater. lol Gotta love the idea of good sleep.
I'm just glad that there is treatment available and this isn't something I'll just have to live with.
Thanks to all for the well wishes. At least yall will have lots of goofy hydrocodone inspired posts from me to look forward to. lol

I had the deviated septum surgery two weeks ago along with ridding my sinuses of infectious tissue. everything went well, including the follow-up appointment, (for which I had to be sedated in the operating room again four days ago). I can't speak for the tonselectomy or the third procedure you mentioned, but I hope everything goes well. They sedated me last week because I couldn't tolerate the postop visit while awake. I' not even going to describe what had to be done. Hugs.

Post 12 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Monday, 29-Oct-2012 12:09:57

wow, that's one heck of a follwo-up. lol
Hope you heal quickly and that the procedure accomplishes its goals.
Thanks for the encouragement.

Post 13 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Tuesday, 30-Oct-2012 19:54:11

You're welcome. so far, so good. I'm breathing easier, and have been told I don't sound as nasally as I used to.

Post 14 by Texas Shawn (The cute, cuddley, little furr ball) on Wednesday, 31-Oct-2012 12:56:23

I had both eyes removed in 209, if I hadn't had stiches I really wouldn't have known anything was done. but hope it all gos well. I think I'd rather have the eye thing done again stead of what your doing. smile

Post 15 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Thursday, 01-Nov-2012 9:05:13

Wow, really? I've heard that's super painful. Sounds like you flew through it though.

Post 16 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Saturday, 10-Nov-2012 1:32:55

Well, today was the day.
I can already say that even just a few hours after surgery, I'm already noticing a major improvement in my ability to breathe through my nose. Wooooohoooo!

Obviously my pain killers are working. lol

So far the recovery hasn't been as bad as I feared. One of my biggest fears was not being able to breathe.

There's a good deal of pain but that was to be expected and it certainly isn't anything I can't handle.

Thanks to all for your encouragement and wellwishes.

Post 17 by Gilman Gal (A billy Gilman fan forever and always!!) on Tuesday, 11-Dec-2012 4:28:49

having an eye removed is not fun, or at least it wasn't for me. It was worse because they did not give me a strong enough pain killer. oh god that sucked! after the pain killer thing was fixed though, I did fine. Itched like mad but hey no pain so that was good.

Post 18 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Tuesday, 11-Dec-2012 9:04:18

Oh wow, I can't even imagine. I've heard that's very painful. Anytime there's healing there's going to be insane itching. That's almost as bad as the pain because it's always in places that can't be scratched.

Post 19 by Gilman Gal (A billy Gilman fan forever and always!!) on Tuesday, 11-Dec-2012 21:12:52

yeah no kidding. right on the stitches, could not rub them or anything. I was about ready to scream. sometimes it still itches under the prosthetic though. ug!

Post 20 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Wednesday, 09-Jan-2013 11:02:33

I can relate. I had my right eye removed in 2005, and the left eye removed in 2010. both times, the itching was horrible. appendicitis was hell too.

Post 21 by loves animals (This site is so "educational") on Thursday, 27-Jun-2013 7:21:37

awe and last week i had my adnoids removed and also a grommit was put in because i was having a lot of issues with my ear, infections and i'm still recovering from it though i ended up getting an infection but not sure from where and next month i have my follow up appointment.
I"m glad your operation went well and i wish you well on your recovery, smiles.

Post 22 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Thursday, 27-Jun-2013 10:41:46

Ouch, that sounds painful. Hang in there though. Out of the 15 operations I've had in my life, this was the most difficult recovery but also the most successful. Well, ok, the birth of my child was the most successful but you know what I mean. lol
Good luck with your recovery.

Speaking of such, I will be having a kidney transplant in a few months and I'm absolutely terrified as well. Dad has even more of a right than me though as he'll be the one donating to me and for the doner, it's a lot worse apparently but, in talking to a friend who's been through it, I'm not even worse than before. I want to talk to her about it to know exactly what to expect but also as Chelsea said earlier,it's best not to think about it; it's gotta be done.
I've not stayed in hostpital for more than two nights before and we stay in five and have the drip in for over 24 hours *shudders* and the catheter; never had one of them in before, but heard they hurt when going in and out; I know they're the least of my worries. Lol
Dimestic, glad yours went well and of course ditto to Kat.

Post 24 by Smiling Sunshine (I've now got the bronze prolific poster award! now going for the silver award!) on Friday, 28-Jun-2013 9:09:41

Wow, I can imagine that would be very scary. I'm not a guy so can't speak to how a cathiter is for yall but I've had them before during different surgieries and don't remember it being that bad. It's just a little sting or discomfort for a second or two. Again though, I'm not a guy.
Make sure to take some good audio books for the hospital stay. That's what I've always done. I wish you the absolute best of luck. I'm glad your dad is able to donate. Please keep us posted.

Post 25 by loves animals (This site is so "educational") on Friday, 28-Jun-2013 23:27:59

Well i wish you both all the best with the up coming surgery your to have and that i hope you both have a speedy recovery, Good luck.
I've fully recovered from mine though i have a bit of a runny nose but other than that i'm well, smiles.

Post 26 by rdfreak (THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE-BLUE KANGA-KICKIN AUSIE) on Monday, 01-Jul-2013 0:21:17

I'm not a guy either, but thanks very much and I will keep you posted for sure.

Post 27 by loves animals (This site is so "educational") on Saturday, 10-Aug-2013 6:41:24

was curious to know how your surgery went and if not had it yet I hope that when you do have it you have a speedy recovery, smiles.
Well grommet is still in and will be for 6 months and in the same time it falls out and it has been a success as my hearing is back to the way it was which i'm happy about, smiles.

Post 28 by rdfreak (THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE-BLUE KANGA-KICKIN AUSIE) on Monday, 12-Aug-2013 0:50:01

Who me? Well I prob won't be having mine til early next year now. I am going to a seminar on organ transplant next wednesday along with my Mum who is now donating probably. It's compulsory to attend these.
But, I now know that getting this done will be better than dying eventually so I'm OK about it for now. :)

Post 29 by Gilman Gal (A billy Gilman fan forever and always!!) on Saturday, 28-Dec-2013 5:44:58

i wish you all the best with the operation. That sounds scary.

Post 30 by loves animals (This site is so "educational") on Friday, 03-Jan-2014 5:08:19

I wish you all the luck for it and that is nice of your mum and you know I would do the same if I could for my family members and yes it will be good to have your life extended, smiles.

Post 31 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Sunday, 19-Jan-2014 17:01:06

How did the kidney transplant go? I hope you are doing well. Hugs. The last surgery I had was posted about in a separate topic. everything went fine, minus post-operative pain, but I'm a lot better since i had the procedure on my sinuses. I'm just praying I won't have to go through that again anytime soon.

Post 32 by rdfreak (THE ONE AND ONLY TRUE-BLUE KANGA-KICKIN AUSIE) on Monday, 20-Jan-2014 0:21:11

Ah still haven't had it; will be in a few months but haven't got a date yet. I'll post in this topic for anyone interested.

Post 33 by loves animals (This site is so "educational") on Monday, 20-Jan-2014 4:23:19

yes I am interested to hear more when you have more information to pass on as things like this interest me, smiles.
